Ultrasonic and histological findings in liver cirrhosis were studied in 37 patients. Parenchymal echo patterns were classified into three types according to the size of echo spots (I: marked coarse, II: moderate coarse, III: fine). In cases with severe fatty infiltration, parenchymal echo pattern was fine. In septal cirrhosis, thin fibrous tissue separating adjacent nodules and absence of necrosis, parenchymal echo pattern was coarsed. Also in inactive cirrhosis with thick fibrous connective tissue, coarsening of the parenchymal echo pattern was observed. Because the percentage of the fibrous tissue was not correlated with the size of parenchymal echo spots. In cirrhosis with submassive necrosis, the parenchymal echo pattern was fine. To conclude, parenchymal echo patterns of liver cirrhosis were affected not only by fatty infiltration, but also degeneration of liver cells, especially necrosis.
