Clinical feature and prognosis of the patients with mildly dilated left ventricle (mildly dilated heart disease: MDHD) without apparent causes such as valvular regurgitation or ischemic heart disease were evaluated with echocardiography. Among 24 patients with MDHD, 12 patients had a history of systemic hypertension, 3 patients had a history of tachyarrhythmia of transient or fixed atrial fibrillation, and 3 patients were considered to be a mitral valve prolapse syndrome. Six patients, however, had no such presumed cause. During a follow-up period more than one year, five patients deteriorated their cardiac functions, and progressed into the clinical feature like dilated cardiomyopathy. It was concluded that about half cases with MDHD were a kind of hypertensive heart disease, and that a few cases, however, might be an early stage of dilated cardiomyopathy.
