The depth⁄width ratio is only one quantitative Ultrasonographic diagnostic criteria of seven criteria used in diagnosing breast lesions. Its diagnostic value, however has not been fully established, because a method of measuring the depth⁄width ratio has not been clearly defined. The purpose of this study is to find the most useful method of measuring the depth⁄width ratio.
In our institute, the depth⁄width ratio was measured in both the long and short axial sections of breast tumors. Judgement of malignancy was determined by the depth⁄width ratio, which was greater than 0.7 in the long axial d⁄w and 0.8 in the short axial d⁄w. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were then compared between the long–axial depth⁄width ratio and the short–axial depth⁄width ratio. The diagnostic accuracy of the short–axial depth⁄width ratio was statistically greater than that of the long–axial depth⁄width ratio.
In conclusion, the depth⁄width ratio should be measured in both short and long axial sections of breast tumor, and should be stated clearly. In our study subjects, the short axial depth⁄width ratio was statistically excellent in diagnostic accuracy.
