This paper describes a method using holographic stereogram for three dimensional display of ultrasonic images. The hologram features a comprehensible display of the three dimensional structures of tissues, portable recording media, and producible.of a large number of copies. This method is performed as follows. First, all of the B-scan images required for three dimensional imaging are taken and transferred into a computer using an A/D converter and a digital frame memory. The projection of the object onto a two dimensional screen is calculated using computer graphics, and the resulting images are then displayed on a monitor. A hologram is made from the films on which the projections as two-dimensional images are recorded. In this study we constructed an image processing system based on a unix computer. The hologram was made from the B-scan images of human fetus. The resulting hologram shows a comprehensible image for the three-dimensional contours of the fetus, although further study will be required to improve the image quality.
