Recently, a new echocardiographic imaging system has been developed that detects and traces endocardial boundaries in real time, based on the quantitative acoustic properties of tissue and blood. Acoustic quantification (AQ: the real-time automated edge detection system) was interfaced with special software to allow on-line display of the instantaneous left ventricular (LV) cavity area (cm2) and fractional area change (%FAC). Our purpose was to compare measurements of the endocardial area that were manually traced from conventional echocardiograms with those obtained by the real-time automated edge detection system. Normal subjects were used. Although the real-time derived results were underestimated, excellent correlations were obtained for the left ventricular end-diastolic [24±4 (AQ) vs 26±4 cm2 (manually)] and end-systolic areas [16±4 (AQ) vs 17±4 cm2 (manually)] measured from apical four chamber view (r=0.98, p2 vs r=0.90, p2, respectively). Manually drawn FAC and real-time FAC also correlated well (r=0.99, p
