We previously reported on the usefulness of transvaginal sonography in the early detection of uterine endometrial cancer. Here we analyze echo-level histogram pattern of the uterine endometrium in 99 women with atypical genital bleeding (7 with uterine endometrial cancer, 5 with uterine endometrial hyperplasia, and 87 with normal endometria). We used a scanner, a personal computer, and NIH Image 1.55 computer software to analyze echo-level histogram pattern and ratio of echo-level histogram of the uterine endometrium to that of the myometrium. Ratio of echo-level histogram of the uterine endometrium to that of the myometrium was 0.85±0.11 in the 7 cases of uterine endometrial cancer, 0.99±0.05 in the 5 cases of uterine endometrial hyperplasia, and 0.96±0.07 in the 87 cases of normal uterine endometrium. These findings suggest that most cases of uterine endometrial cancer are highly echoic on transvaginal sonography.
